Identity fraud occurs when someone steals your personal information and uses it to impersonate you to commit fraud. This could include opening a Kroo bank account, applying for credit cards or loans.
How can I spot identity theft?
Watch for these warning signs that your personal information may have been compromised:
- Receiving mail, emails, texts or phone calls about accounts, services, or loans you didn’t apply for, or being contacted by debt collectors, could indicate someone has opened accounts in your name without your knowledge.
- If you’re suddenly denied credit or a loan, check your credit report for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries.
- Be wary of unsolicited emails, texts, or phone calls asking for personal or financial details. Always verify the sender’s legitimacy before responding.
How do fraudsters get my personal information?
Fraudsters can gather your information in several ways:
- Phishing or smishing: Fraudsters impersonate trusted organisations in emails or texts to steal your details.
- Social media: Personal information shared online can be exploited.
- Stolen or lost post: Fraudsters may intercept mail or rummage through rubbish for documents containing your details.
- Hacking/Data breaches: Criminals access data through security flaws or hacked accounts.
What could fraudsters do with my stolen information?
- Fraudsters may impersonate you to access accounts or open new ones, leading to unauthorised transactions.
- They could apply for loans, credit cards, or other financial products in your name.
- Selling your information on the dark web. Stolen data can be sold to criminals for further illegal activities.
How do I stay safe and protect myself from identity fraud?
- Use strong, unique passwords: Avoid reusing passwords. Use a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols for added security.
- Be vigilant: Regularly monitor your accounts and credit report for any unusual activity.
- Verify requests: Always confirm the legitimacy of anyone asking for personal information, particularly online or by phone.
- Be cautious with personal information: Never share passwords, PINs, or sensitive details with anyone you don’t trust.
- Shred documents: Destroy personal documents before throwing them away to avoid theft.
- Secure your devices: Keep your software and security settings up to date.
- Be mindful of social media: Tighten privacy settings and be selective about the information you share publicly.
